KOTA KINABALU: In a generous display of community spirit, Kinabalu Running Club has donated a total of RM40,000 to seven local non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The fund was collected through its annual event, the Borneo Marathon.
The ceremony to hand over the donation was held at the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) office, witnessed by Mayor Datuk Sabin Samitah.
The seven NGOs that received the donation were DBKK Recreation and Welfare Club, Sabah Athletics Association 2022, Teachers Education Institute Malaysia Kent Campus, Sabah Cheshire Home, Volunteers for Community Engagement and Empowerment Malaysia, Special Olympics Sabah and Palliative Care Association of Kota Kinabalu.
An NGO under Kiulu Assemblyman Service Center also received a donation of RM5,000 at the Sabah Tourism Board building in July.
Following the mock cheque presentation, Sabin expressed his enthusiasm for the club’s charitable efforts.
“We are looking forward to continuing working closely with the Kinabalu Running Club to strive for a more vibrant and inclusive community. Kota Kinabalu is a beautiful city, and we believe all runners from around the world would enjoy experiencing everything it has to offer.
“Events like these not only support local NGOs but also promote our city as a premier destination for sports and tourism,” he said.
Sabin also highlighted future collaborative initiatives, stating, “DBKK is excited about the prospect of organising a twin city cup together with the Kinabalu Running Club for the Borneo Half Marathon since it was organised in conjunction with KK City Day since 2020.
“This event will invite participation from neighbouring states, fostering stronger regional ties and promoting a culture of health and fitness. We believe this will showcase Kota Kinabalu as a dynamic hub for sports and community engagement,” he added.
President of Kinabalu Running Club, Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng, shared his thoughts on the club’s mission and future plans.
“Our club has always been dedicated to making a tangible difference in the community.
“By supporting these NGOs, we are not just contributing financially but also raising awareness for their crucial work. Every runner who participates in our events is more than just an athlete; they are champions for these causes, helping to drive positive change and support those in need.”
Heng added, “Working together with DBKK on the twin city cup represents a bold step forward in our efforts to promote unity and healthy lifestyles.
“This initiative will not only boost our local sports scene but also create lasting connections with our neighbouring states.
This event will be a testament to the power of sports in bridging communities and fostering a spirit of friendly competition.”
The Kinabalu Running Club is the organiser of Borneo Marathon, the third largest marathon in Malaysia and the largest in Borneo.
The marathon routes are certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the event was ranked 28th among the World’s 50 Best Running Races by Runner’s World magazine in 2018.
The club is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all participants, implementing stringent health and safety measures in line with local guidelines.
