The Borneo Half Marathon (BHM) has swiftly gained recognition as one of Sabah’s premier events, renowned for its lively atmosphere and strong sense of community. Co-organised by the Kinabalu Running Club (KRC) and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), the marathon serves as a vibrant celebration of health, fitness, and the thriving growth of Kota Kinabalu.

Since its inception in 2020, the Borneo Half Marathon has become an annual highlight, held in conjunction with Kota Kinabalu City Day, which commemorates the city’s attainment of city status in February 2000. This event offers participants a unique opportunity to experience Kota Kinabalu’s iconic landmarks and attractions as they traverse a route through the heart of the city.

Runners are treated to a scenic journey through one of Malaysia’s most picturesque waterfront cities, known as the “Nature Resort City,” where bustling urban settings seamlessly blend with serene coastal views. The Borneo Half Marathon is designed to be both accessible and enjoyable, immersing participants in Kota Kinabalu’s natural beauty while celebrating the city’s unique charm and captivating character.

As the city approaches its 25th anniversary of achieving city status in 2025, the Borneo Half Marathon continues to play a pivotal role in celebrating Kota Kinabalu’s cultural and sporting heritage. The event not only honours the city’s milestones but also contributes significantly to its tourism and sports industries, further enhancing its dynamic spirit and global reputation.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall’s ongoing support for the marathon underscores its commitment to promoting community health and elevating the city’s profile. Mayor Dato’ Sri Dr. Haji Sabin Samitah has highlighted the event’s benefits for both local residents and visitors, emphasising its role in showcasing the city’s lively character and international appeal. Through Kota Kinabalu City Hall, invitations to participate in the marathon are extended to cities across Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak, and Kota Kinabalu’s sister cities, including Yongin City and Yeosu City from South Korea; City of Rockingham from Western Australia; Ratchaburi Provincial Hall from Thailand; Vladivostok City from Russia; City of Oregon from Portland; Toyama City from Japan; and several cities in China, including Heyuan City, Guangdong Province, Jiangmen Municipality City, Guangdong Province, Wuhan City, Hangzhou City, and Xi’an City.

The success of the Borneo Half Marathon is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the organising committee, government departments, agencies, partners, sponsors and volunteers. As runners gear up for the event, they join in a tradition that honours Kota Kinabalu’s growth and resilience – a city that proudly continues to advance and thrive.

Thank you, Kota Kinabalu City, and thank you, runners, for being part of this celebration!
