About us
The Kinabalu Running Club (KRC), based in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, is a community-driven organisation dedicated to promoting fitness, unity, and well-being. Led by a passionate team of professionals, KRC strives to create a safe, inclusive environment for runners of all abilities. Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or just starting out, KRC offers opportunities for everyone to embrace a healthier lifestyle and become part of a vibrant running community.
At KRC, health and safety are top priorities. The club ensures that all events comply with local regulations and safety guidelines, safeguarding the well-being of participants. This commitment to safety allows runners of all levels to enjoy their race experience, whether participating in a competitive marathon or a fun community run.
Beyond promoting fitness, KRC is also dedicated to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Through partnerships with local NGOs and organisations, KRC plays an active role in fostering positive social and environmental change. Whether advocating for environmental sustainability, promoting active lifestyles, or supporting educational programs, KRC is committed to making a lasting impact on Borneo, Sabah, and beyond.
KRC’s flagship event, the Borneo International Marathon (BIM), held annually in May, is the largest and longest-running marathon in Borneo and the third-largest in Malaysia. Since its debut in 2008 with just 529 runners, BIM has grown significantly, attracting over 10,000 participants from around the world. Runners are drawn to its challenging yet scenic routes, which pass through diverse landscapes; from lush tropical forests to vibrant coastal areas offering a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and heritage of Sabah and Borneo.
In 2018, Runner’s World Magazine ranked BIM 28th among the World’s 50 Best Running Races, highlighting its international appeal. The race’s success has helped establish Borneo as a prominent destination for athletes and adventure-seekers alike.
In addition to BIM, KRC also co-organises the Borneo Half Marathon (BHM) with the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu), held annually in February to celebrate Kota Kinabalu City Day. Rapidly gaining popularity among both local and international runners, the BHM offers participants a unique chance to experience the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes of Kota Kinabalu, with scenic routes that showcase the city’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Both the Borneo International Marathon and the Borneo Half Marathon are officially recognised and sanctioned by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), ensuring that both events meet global standards for course accuracy, safety, and quality. This accreditation adds credibility to the races and attracts serious runners seeking professionally organised events.
Beyond these major marathons, KRC hosts and help managing a variety of fun runs, charity races, and fitness initiatives throughout the year. These events promote community engagement, encourage physical activity, and support local causes. By organising such events, KRC helps to grow Sabah’s sports industry while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles among both residents and visitors.
Since its inception, KRC has raised over RM 1.1 million for 36 charitable organisations, benefiting communities throughout Sabah and beyond. The ongoing support from the running community, sponsors, volunteers, and partners ensures that KRC’s events continue to make a lasting, positive impact.
The Borneo International Marathon and Borneo Half Marathon remain the highlight events on KRC’s calendar, providing athletes and visitors with an unforgettable experience while showcasing the exceptional landscapes and cultural heritage of Sabah and Borneo. These events offer a fantastic opportunity to explore the region’s natural beauty, warm hospitality, and diverse culture — all while pursuing a healthier lifestyle.
Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or simply looking to participate in a fun community event, KRC offers a platform for fitness activities that promote both physical well-being and a sense of community.
